Step into the wayback machine for this 1989 Nine Inch Nails performance of “Down In It” on the stunningly cheesy TV show “Dance Party USA”.

I don’t think they’re actually playing :)

Labyrinth Ear - Navy Light (4am Mix)

Chill remix of a chill electro tune.  I don’t know much about this group - there’s no wikipedia article!  They’re a London duo formed in 2010 - they’ve just got the one EP out.  I really like what I hear.

Dr Dre - The Watcher

“Things just ain’t the same for gangstas,

Cops is anxious to put niggas in handcuffs.

They wanna hang us, see us dead and enslave us,

Keep us trapped in the same place we’re raised in.

Then they wonder why we act so outrageous,

Run around stressed out and pull out gauges.

Cause everytime you let the animal out cages,

It’s dangerous to people who look like strangers.”

Sublime - April 26, 1992 (Kage Remix)

“They said it was for the black man, they said it was for the mexican and not the white man.  But if you look at the streets it wasn’t about Rodney King.  It’s about this fucked up situation and these fucked up police.  It’s about coming up and staying on top and screaming 187 on a mother fuckin cop.  It’s not written on the paper, it’s on the wall.  National Guard smoke from all around.”

It’s really disturbing me to see my old adopted city burning.  Every day people’s lives are being torn apart by a clash between the disenfranchised and some phantom boogeyman keeping them down.  People are going to ask why.  Long ago artists and bards went to war to document the battle in ballad.  These days they come out of the streets for those to hear if they want to.  It’s not necessarily the “correct” account of events, but it’s one side of it.  If you’re asking why, listen to some music from other periods of discourse in modern history.  There’s a common theme of people struggling to get by in the modern world in whatever way they can until the tipping point.

Live Mashup - RJD2 vs Nat King Cole

Years ago my co-blogger, Tim, expressed his distaste for RJD2.  I thought he was crazy, and I still do.  The theme to Mad Men is a classic!  This group of musicians/fans took RJD2’s instrumentals and mashed in Nat King Cole’s lyrics to Nature Boy.  The result is fantastic!
